HOL in July: Cheaters & Overachievers
From cheating to overachieving, we covered various topics that are relevant to us as things unfold in Singapore. In addition, we established a marketing partnership with a superb festival!
Greetings sponsors, readers, and writers!
We hope that you had a fruitful July. Things couldn’t be more dramatic in our usually dead/boring political scene. This highlights the nature of impermanence more than ever and also the need for Sila (Virtues) in our community.
When things get challenging in our intimate relationships, what can we do? What goes through the mind before one cheats? We had a podcast recorded on cheating right here! (Pre-recorded before the slew of cheating in the political scene)
Perfection as crumbly ideal
Speaking to friends on these happenings, many felt that it was just another example of setting ultra-high standards in our minds for squeaky-clean politicians only to be let down by impermanence.
“Personalities change. Images of others are mind-made. Taking refuge in enlightened beings is better” remarked my wise Buddhist friend. While we want people to always achieve better things for our nation, they too can fall very short.
This made me recall Tenzin Palmo’s video of how we craft images of our loved ones and fall in love with that image. This sets us up for sadness and disappointment.
Closing the huh gap
In July, we did interesting & educational articles on how we can prep for meditation retreats and the experience of going through one.
We hope these articles softened the entry into meditation retreats which can be one of the greatest opportunities for arising deep peace & wisdom in our busy lay life.
We also shared a non-exhaustive list of ways to greet monastics. We found ourselves editing back and forward on the terms. This humbled us in how much we too are still learning in the Dhamma journey.
In the spirit of closing that ‘huh’ gap, we shared a wise salaryman’s reflections to his graduate self and how the Dhamma helps a working mom stay zen in the chaos of motherhood.
Things are heating up!
In line with our goals of becoming a financially sustainable Buddhist enterprise, we are happy to share that HOL inked a partnership with THISBFF (Thus Have I Seen Buddhist Film Festival) as a marketing partner!
This festival, held once every two years, brings together the best films from the Buddhist world. Book your tickets for Buddhist films right here!
Meanwhile, we are exploring long-term marketing partnerships with two other organisations to help bring their noble visions to the mainstream. Stay tuned!
Obtaining a stable revenue stream for HOL will enable us to expand our offerings to the community (just like our directory!) and keep the majority of our content free!
P.S. Only on whatsapp? We launched our whatsapp channel last month!

Handful of Leaves is the sole reason how I connected back with Dhamma after leaving my youth group. I am so thankful to have reconnected back with the commun
