HOL in Feb: How love can go wrong or right
In February, we covered the different shades of love. From family gatherings, to love on auto pilot to relationship abuse, we had many unique stories sprinkled with Dhamma lessons.
Greetings supporters of HOL,
As I contemplate this article on the freezing (now -7 degrees) slopes of Japan, I can’t help but wonder how Buddha talked about putting our minds in the middle. I clearly have not put my body in the middle.
1. Being Realistic with Love
This month was a pretty unique month celebrating CNY, Valentine’s Day, and also Sangha Day (Māgha Pūjā). At HOL, we try to keep things real (seeing things as they truly are hew hew).
Hence, we shared exciting stories such as:
Maintaining Harmony during CNY: Hot buttons and “got a boyfriend already?”
Love Life on Autopilot: Why do we treat strangers well and love ones like trash?
Relationship Abuse: How the Dhamma helped me out of relationship abuse
Keeping Sense Restraint: How to deal with scantily clad people at a Buddhist monastery?
Losing a Friend to Cancer: How can the Buddha & gratitude bring solace?
2. Getting our learning goals done
If you have been procrastinating in learning the Dhamma in a structured manner, this is your signup for one!
Kai Xin, my co-founder, compiled a comprehensive list of Buddhist courses available in Singapore (P.S. most of the sign-ups and hence no longer listed, but you can email the organisers).
I benefitted greatly from Dhamma Foundation Course by Buddhist Scholar Sylvia Bay. From learning about how fast random dogmas arose right after Buddha’s parinibbāna, to how we can best practice the Dhamma as laypeople, I found it super insightful!
3. Meet fellow HOL supporters
Last year, we gathered as a community to interact and get to know HOL better.
As we celebrate a new milestone of 7k+ unique web readers every month, we wish to do another community event:) We definitely could not have come this far without your support.
Our next gathering should be on 20th April in Singapore!
If you like to chat with us more, we got a booth at Singapore Buddhist Federation’s Vesak Day on 12th May! If you are too shy to chat, you can listen to a recorded BBC radio interview that featured Cheryl from our podcast team and me!
4. Fun detours
Zen Monk Kanho Yakushiji, who started exploring music as a way to escape from Buddhism, does the Heart Sutra on Vulture’s
Peak, India.

Wall of impact
Hi HOL, thanks so much for creating this content! They have been very helpful for me in my daily life
‘The article on reserving kindness for our loved ones spoke to me. It is not easy to ‘go easy’ on our loved ones’
